Blog Group 6

Our group chose the blog http://io9.com/.This is an interesting blog because the rhetoric appeals to academia with stories about black holes and biology. However, it cleverly appeals to a larger audience with advertisements that range from t-shirts and movies to the side bar that contains stories more suited for the common nerd. The blogs ethos comes primarily from the authors that in general have graduate degrees in the field of which they are writing. As to this blog being timely, the main topics are subjects on the cutting edge of scientific research. In addition, the topics are relevant to the scientific community and society as a whole (although they might fail to recognize it). Overall, this blog is timely, relevant, and compelling on levels that could be said to "come from the future."

  1. I found this blog very entertaining. While the articles may not appeal to me the color scheme, eye-catching pictures, and relevant advertisements did. Though it is a scientifically based blog, it has a little bit of something for other typers of internet surfers as well, like articles about comics and humorous stories about books and movies. Even though I'm sure plenty of research has gone into most of these articles, I'm still a little skeptical about the credibility. Who exactly is allowed to post on this site? And if it is a select few, where are their credentials to back up what they are saying? Overall, however, I did find this website very enlightening.

  2. The blog we chose is different from most of the other blogs posted thus far in the class. It uses pathos by engaging articles about current scientific topics. The advertisements are not scientific based however, they promote current movies and other common products. Some questions to be asked about this blog are: What is the purpose of utilizing advertisements that don't pertain to the scientific theme of the blog? Is the rhetoric of the blog effective in accumulating followers? Would you be interested in the content or advertisements featured on this website?

  3. I think this blog like many other blogs is a sister group from either Gawker or even Jezebel. The information is timely and useful it is also well organized. This type of blog however, is a great source to find out information about science/movies. This is a great source of information because each blog is credible because the authors have a degree. Overall this blog is a great source to find out information.

  4. This blog is very science oriented. It's a good change of pace from some of the other gossip and sports related blogs that one is used to seeing. I find it very interesting and very appropriate for people in secondary education. The posts related to new movies shows its timely also.

  5. This blog is centered around science and technology. Even the articles that are about books are films are mostly about sci-fi or comic/fantasy themes. The titles of the articles do a good job of drawing you in. For example the title "live fast die young" was actually an article about life expectance of different species.

  6. Who doesn't like science? I know I like to be mind-f****d, and articles like the ones on this blog, because they are science related, are very likely to blow my mind. More specifically, the article about black holes is wild in itself because space is a mystery to everyone.

  7. I think the most interesting part of this blog, and one of the main reasons our group chose it was the interesting contrast between the academic flavored articles/"nerd" based stories on the side bar and the advertisements that are almost exclusively popular culture based.

  8. This blog is extremely similar to its sister sites, as both center around news and entertainment that cover a multitude of topics. It is unique however, because all of the published articles have a futurist and scientific attitude. Alternative topics include "mad science", "conspiracies" and "super heros". The target audience is also quite different. You wouldn't be browsing this blog if you were looking for the latest Hollywood gossip. Nonetheless, this blog is timely and relevant to current issues.

  9. I agree with Hannah. They definitely have a specific audience they are trying to get at. I like that this blog doesn't have an abundant amount of advertising, but the advertising that is there, seems to relate to the post. For example, at the end of the post about the computer on Jeopardy, there is a link to where you can buy the book called, The Most Human Human: What Talking With Computers Teaches Us About What It Means To Be Alive. Although it mostly seems to be a blog for the scientific people, I think there are some posts for everyone to get something out of.

  10. I think this blog is loaded with ethos. The fact that it is focused around the science fiction/movie themes makes it seem like the authors are experts in those areas. I like how they don't try to overdue it and talk about everything in the world, as some blogs do.

  11. This blog is made for a specific audience. Those that like science fiction and such related topics. Of course the advertising on the blog appeals to the audience the blog is trying to reach. The blog isn't for people who are looking for Hollywood stories or celebrity gossip, but it does do its job by providing relevant science fiction stories.

  12. The previous blogs that have been posted by groups have appealed to college age people who are interested in fashion, music, gossip, and other unimportant topics that are just fun to read and talk about. However, this blog has a much more scholarly topic, and I think that it leads to a very different audience. It appeals to people that are interested in the sciences and new scientific information/discoveries. This blog is very timely because it deals with new information that is being discovered in science. One of the blog posts was "printers could soon be making replacement human skin." This topic is timely because it deals with a new invention or discovery and it could be considered compelling because it catches the readers eye and makes them want to continue reading. I thought that this blog was interesting and had ethos from the fact that the writers were well educated on their topics and some even had degrees in the field of study of their posts.

  13. Our blog is very similar to previous blogs such as Gawker and Jezebel. The setup of the website and overall layout are very similar as well. The difference is the target audience and who the commercials appeal to. The science based articles and interesting topics is what appealed to us to choose this blog.

  14. This blog is easy to navigate. It clearly has the title of the articles on the main page. Also the side bar is easy to navigate. Plus it is broken down into topics so that you can look to see what topic it is about before you start reading. Also they place advertisements on the side bar so that when you are scrolling you will see them. This blog is relevant because it shows the recently found science facts that can be used for our research that we can do.

  15. This blog looks just like the Jezebel and gawker blogs, mainly because they are linked to each other. It's still easy to navigate and the articles are pretty cool. The science and technology based articles were interesting to me the most and also timely. The ads on the right side noticeable as well.

  16. I think this blog is very eye catching and appealing to most everybody due to the colors, catchy titles, and images used. Although some of the articles didn't really interest me much, I still was drawn in my some of the titles and images. I think this is a very important aspect of a blog because the purpose of creating one is for people to read it, and I think this blog does a great job of appealing to viewers.

  17. I do like that this blog is different from the others thus far. It is geared towards a completely different theme, and the article titles caught my attention. I thought it was almost refreshing to see scientific articles about recent occurrences. At the bottom, it has links to several other blogs, including Jezebel, which leads me to think it may be credible. On the other hand, there are less ads compared to others. Do they want to be an individual or do other companies not support them?

  18. The fact that this blog speaks on more of a Sci-fi level, verses the typical college humor type of blogs we have seen thus far, is refreshing. Articles are presented in a new light with the incorporation of Sci-fi and futuristic titles and pictures, compelling the viewing to read on and continue further into the site. Its relations with Jezebel and Gawker, blogs that we have viewed previously in class, aid in the site's credibility, as mentioned by Kailey. I am also in agreement that the blog has very few ads, which is a perk in my eyes. Advertisements help make the blog profitable, but if there are too many the promotions take away from the blog itself.

  19. This blog is definitely more for people that are into scifi and the such. It is directed towards. Some of these articles interest me because I am into a few scifi movies and shows. A lot of it is about things I have never heard of though.

  20. The blog is more of an appeal to the science community, as the main focus of the blog is about the universe. Aside from the the science community, the blog attracts a wider audience through it's science fiction content. One thing often talked about with science fiction and the universe is technology. Both science fiction and technology are big components of our society, which makes this blog and its topic timely to our era, relevant to the audiences reading it, and its topics compelling.

  21. I agree with the people who have posted before me. This blog defiantly appeals more to people who like science. The blog is easy to navigate and has many different topics to choose from if you do want to read the blog. It also has links to other blogs if you want to change topics and look at another type of blog.

  22. Before I went to the site, I thought it wouldn't appeal to me because I'm not a big science fan. However, after clicking the link and exploring a little, it grew on me. The articles aren't to "science-y" which makes it more likable to me.
